The short version
- Shopify agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores. It sends your products to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta through Shopify Catalog. Check Sales channels > Agentic in your admin.
- ChatGPT and Copilot require that you sell to US customers, not that you are based in the US. Google AI Mode and Gemini requires a US-based store.
- Eligible does not mean visible. Each AI channel decides what to show, so product data quality is the lever you control.
- Direct checkout in Copilot and Google behaves differently from your store: client-side pixels don't fire, upsell blocks may not load, and subscriptions, bundles and customizable products are excluded.

Your store may already be selling in AI chats. Shopify turned on agentic storefronts by default for eligible stores, so your products can surface when a shopper asks ChatGPT for waterproof hiking boots under $150 or asks Copilot for a gift for a runner.
Whether yours show up depends on three things you control: Shopify Catalog eligibility, the quality of your product data, and how your checkout and tracking behave when an AI channel sells for you. That is what Shopify agentic commerce comes down to in practice. This guide covers each one, then the developer side for teams that want to build on it.
What is Shopify agentic commerce, and how does it work?
Agentic commerce: shopping where an AI assistant finds, compares and sometimes buys products on a shopper's behalf. On Shopify, products reach those assistants through Shopify Catalog, and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is the open standard that defines how agents search, build carts and check out.
The feature is called agentic storefronts, and you manage it in Sales channels > Agentic. You must accept the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service to use it. Products reach most channels through Shopify Catalog. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, they come through the Google & YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center.
Orders from AI channels land in your admin with channel or referrer attribution, and you keep the customer relationship and the post-purchase experience. Each channel works a little differently:
| Channel | How the purchase happens | Core requirements |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Discovery only. The shopper checks out on your own store, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or in a new tab on web. | Sell to US customers (your store can be based elsewhere). Catalog-eligible products. Three store policies completed. Terms accepted. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout inside Copilot. On by default for eligible stores, and shown to US customers only. | Sell to US customers. Catalog-eligible products. Three store policies completed. Terms accepted. |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout inside Google. Rolling out to eligible stores, so it may not be live for yours yet. | US-based store selling to US customers. Valid Google Merchant Center account with products synced. Catalog-eligible products. Three store policies completed. |
| Meta | Direct checkout on Meta surfaces such as Muse, when direct checkout is activated. | Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel installed with product syncing on. Check Shopify's Meta channel page for current regional requirements. |
The three policies are your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy, all completed under Settings > Policies.
Is your Shopify store eligible for Shopify Catalog?
Catalog inclusion is automatic when your store and products meet Shopify's requirements. Check each layer:
- Store: on the Starter plan or higher, not in private mode (no password page), not B2B-only, not locked or restricted, not in development mode, and compliant with Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.
- Products: a title and at least one image, a price above 0 (free products are excluded), published to the Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless channel, an identifiable product URL, not Unlisted, not hidden from search engines, and no sensitive content.
- Account standing: verified email, two-step authentication, identity and business verification when prompted, a record of genuine sales, prompt fulfilment, a low chargeback rate, invoices paid on time, and no open policy issues.
Where to check: if your store isn't eligible, Shopify shows an ineligibility reason next to Sources > Shopify Catalog under Sales channels > Agentic. Start there before touching anything else.
The excluded categories catch people out. Beyond the obvious ones (alcohol, tobacco and vaping, weapons, adult content, prescription and medical products), the list includes services and product add-ons such as extended warranties, installation and subscription services, event tickets, live animals, science and laboratory products, and anything Shopify classifies as Uncategorized. Shopify can change the list at its discretion.
The Uncategorized one is fixable. Shopify classifies products from your product information, so it can differ from the category you set in admin. Thin titles and descriptions can push a product out of Catalog even when nothing about it is restricted.
Eligibility is also reviewed over time. A store can lose it, which makes chargebacks and late fulfilment a visibility problem, not only a cost problem.
Does Shopify agentic commerce work for stores outside the US?
Partly. ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot require that you sell to customers in the United States. Your store can be based anywhere. Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout is stricter: the store must be based in the US and sell to US customers.
Direct checkout in Copilot and Google is shown only to US-based customers. Shoppers elsewhere can still discover your products, but they are sent to your online store to complete the purchase.
If you sell from Canada, the EU or Australia into the US, this is worth checking even though your home market is elsewhere. Before you leave it on, confirm that your US shipping rates, tax settings and return policy are right. An order that originates in an AI chat lands in your admin like any other, and you fulfil it like any other.
How do you make your products more likely to be recommended in AI channels?
Shopify's guidance is direct: provide accurate, detailed, descriptive product information. It also says optimizing improves your chances but doesn't guarantee a placement, because each AI platform has its own factors and decides what to display for a given request.
These are the fields Shopify says AI platforms consider, and what to do with each:
| Product field | What to fix |
|---|---|
| Title | Write for a shopper who describes what they want in a sentence. "Waterproof leather hiking boots, men's, wide fit" gives an agent more to match than "Trailmaster 2". |
| Description | State the facts: materials, dimensions, compatibility, care. Put any required legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters, because channels such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Google ask for that. |
| Images | One image is the minimum to qualify. Add more that show the product clearly. |
| Barcode | Fill in ISBN, UPC or GTIN wherever you have one. |
| Variants and option names | Use plain option names such as Size and Color. If you list variants as separate products, group them with catalog mapping or combined listings. |
| Type, vendor, collections, tags | Use one consistent taxonomy. These are matching signals. |
Four more moves sit outside the product record:
- Complete your store policies. When a shopper asks an AI agent about your returns, it can only reference what you have stored in Shopify.
- Use the Shopify Knowledge Base app. You can review the facts Shopify generates about your store, see common shopper questions, and write your own questions and answers to cover what is unique about you.
- Use catalog mapping. It lets you choose which data sources feed Catalog without changing the product data on your online store.
-
Keep pricing and inventory fresh. A small, stable catalog can live on CSV imports. A large or fast-moving one needs real-time sync through the GraphQL Admin API (
productSet) or a PIM connector app. Our custom API development and integrations work covers the sync layer.
One technical footnote. If an integration syncs barcodes, Shopify API 2026-10 deprecates ProductVariant.barcode in favor of a barcodes connection that holds up to 20 typed barcodes. We cover that and the rest of the release in our Shopify API 2026-10 upgrade checklist.
What changes at checkout and in tracking when an AI channel sells for you?
ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout, so your customizations, branding, selling strategies and payment methods all apply. Copilot, and Google AI Mode and Gemini when direct checkout is on, use a Shopify-powered checkout that differs from yours:
| Area | In Copilot and Google direct checkout | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Client-side pixels | Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire. Only server-to-server pixels (checkout started and completed) fire. | Use the channel attribution on orders in your admin and server-side tracking. Don't expect GA4 to see these orders. |
| Checkout UI extension blocks | Only blocks that can block checkout, with that setting enabled, are eligible to load. Upsells, loyalty, address autocomplete, consent collection, chat, header and footer blocks, and informational blocks may not appear. | Don't rely on a block for anything compliance-critical. |
| Shopify Functions and discounts | Shipping, discount, and cart and checkout validation Functions run. Automatic discounts and codes work. | Move logic that must always apply into Functions. |
| Product types | Subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products aren't supported. | They can't be bought in direct checkout. ChatGPT still uses your full store checkout. |
| Delivery and sign-in | Local delivery, store pickup and pickup points aren't supported. You can't require sign-in before checkout. | Check that your shipping setup works without them. |
Upsells are the one that costs money. If your average order value depends on a checkout upsell block, direct checkout orders won't see it. Move the upsell to the product page or cart, where you control it.
The tracking gap matters just as much. If you are already rebuilding your tracking as web pixels this quarter, see our Shopify script tag migration guide, and keep in mind that client-side pixels still won't see orders placed in Copilot or Google direct checkout.
You can switch direct checkout off per channel. Discovery continues, and shoppers are redirected to your store to buy. That trades in-chat conversion for your upsells and your tracking. Decide per channel based on your catalog mix, and don't assume one setting suits all of them. It is also where checkout extensions and Shopify Functions decisions pay off.
How do you measure and control what AI channels do with your products?
Shopify says you get insights into search and sales performance for your products, and every AI-channel order carries attribution. Controls live in Sales channels > Agentic. With Allow Shopify to manage for me on, Shopify distributes your products across current and future AI channels. Turn it off to choose channel by channel, and to toggle Shopify Catalog access or Direct checkout for each.
Stopping the flow isn't instant. Turning off Catalog access can take up to 7 days to take effect, and a channel may still reference your products through web crawling and indexing. Shopify documents a separate process for hiding specific products from AI channels completely.
Here is a phasing that works for a typical store with Black Friday in the way:
| Phase | Window | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Check | Now to October 23 | Open Sales channels > Agentic, read the Catalog eligibility status, confirm your three policies and the terms. |
| 2. Fix data | October 26 to November 13 | Titles, descriptions, barcodes, option names, collections. Add Knowledge Base FAQs. Set catalog mapping where needed. |
| 3. Decide checkout | By November 13 | Per channel, direct checkout on or redirect, based on your upsell and tracking dependence. |
| Freeze | November 16 to December 1 | No checkout configuration changes through Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Watch order attribution. |
| 4. Review | December 2 onward | Compare AI-attributed orders against store orders on order value and conversion, then adjust. |
Treat AI channels as a free channel to measure, not a guaranteed growth plan. Shopify itself says eligibility doesn't guarantee a placement, so judge it on the orders you can attribute.
What can developers build with UCP and Shopify's MCP servers?
Shopify's agent tooling implements UCP at every step of the buyer journey through MCP servers:
- Negotiate and authenticate. An agent defines a profile, hosted at a well-known URL, so Shopify can verify it and apply the right rate limits and tool access. Higher trust tiers unlock broader access, including completing checkout directly.
- Discover products. The Global Catalog searches products across Shopify merchants. A Storefront Catalog scopes discovery to a single merchant.
- Carts and checkout. Cart MCP builds and iterates on carts over a conversation. Checkout MCP converts a cart into a checkout and hands the buyer to the merchant storefront for payment. Trusted agents can complete checkouts directly.
-
Monitor orders. UCP-shaped order webhooks report fulfilment, refunds, returns, exchanges and cancellations, and a
get_ordertool fetches fresh order state on demand.
Shopify says developers don't apply for UCP access. They register an agent profile in the Developer Dashboard and call the public MCP endpoint. To try it, you need Node.js 18 or higher:
npm install -g @shopify/ucp-cli
Shopify also ships an AI Toolkit plugin for supported AI tools, with a ucp skill that applies UCP best practices against each merchant's live schema. A Universal Cart API, which lets an agent collect items from any merchant into one cart, is open only through an early access waitlist.
For merchants, the Storefront Catalog is the interesting door. It is the foundation for a shopping agent that knows your catalog, your policies and your fulfilment rules. That is implementation work, not configuration, and it is the kind of build BrainBox's AI automation practice covers. Common questions about Shopify agentic commerce
Is my Shopify store automatically listed in ChatGPT?
Shopify's agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores, and ChatGPT discovers products through Shopify Catalog with no setup. To qualify you need to sell to US customers, meet the Shopify Catalog requirements, complete your terms of service, privacy and return and refund policies, and accept the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms. Eligibility does not guarantee that a product appears in a specific answer.
Does selling through ChatGPT or Copilot cost extra on Shopify?
Shopify lists no fees for selling in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot's direct checkout, or Google AI Mode and Gemini's direct checkout. You pay only your standard payment processing fees. Check the current Help Center pages before you budget, since terms can change.
Can I use Shopify agentic commerce if my store is outside the US?
Yes for ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, as long as you sell to customers in the United States. Your store can be based elsewhere. Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout requires a store based in the United States as well as US customers.
How do I stop my products appearing in ChatGPT or Copilot?
In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, select the channel, and deactivate Shopify Catalog access. It can take up to 7 days for sharing to stop, and the channel may still reference products it finds through web crawling. Shopify documents a separate process for hiding specific products from AI channels.
Why aren't my Shopify products showing up in AI channels?
First confirm your store and products meet the Shopify Catalog requirements: a title, at least one image, a price above zero, a published product URL, and no Unlisted status. Then check that the channel is activated and your product data is complete and current. Even eligible products are not guaranteed a slot, because each AI channel decides what to show for a given request.
Can an agency set up my Shopify store for agentic commerce?
Yes. BrainBox Infoway provides Shopify development and AI automation for ecommerce from Ahmedabad, India, with ~20 specialists serving merchants and agencies in the US, EU, AUS, and CAN. The team audits Catalog eligibility, cleans up product data, and adjusts checkout and tracking for AI channel orders. Agencies can hand the work over under a white-label arrangement, or you can get a free quote for your store.
